Breaking the Cycle of Childhood Poverty

Matterlab worked with Child Poverty Action Lab on strategic communications that will help raise awareness, assist communities in understanding public policy, and mobilize support to address systemic issues and connect families with essential resources.

The Challenge

The Child Poverty Action Lab (CPAL) was founded in 2018 to reduce child poverty rates by 50% in one generation in response to inequality in Dallas. Recognizing the unsustainable nature of current poverty alleviation spending, CPAL partnered with Matterlab to launch and grow its presence in order to engage a diverse coalition of leaders and unlock additional funding sources.

The Results

Matterlab played a crucial role in infusing CPAL with a professional identity and strategy, leading to transformative achievements in Dallas, including the fastest-declining child poverty rate in the country, increased participation in benefits programs, and redirection of over $100 million in public funds.

“Hopefully the conversation that we’ll be having in 20 years is about what level of prosperity and opportunity exists across our city…instead of having to focus on how to reduce this level of indignity and lack of opportunity and hope that so many of our children feel far too young.”
Alan Cohen
Founder and Executive Director of CPAL
