Creating the Blueprint for Rural Innovation

Matterlab worked alongside Rural Schools Innovation Zone, which aims to collaborate with other geographic areas on rural challenges, develop regionally-specific solutions, and provide students with access and transportation to course work and teachers they otherwise would not have.

The Challenge

The Rural Schools Innovation Zone (RSIZ) is a first-of-its kind rural district collaborative comprised of five districts and multiple education institutions working together to support students across South Texas. The RSIZ initially joined forces with Matterlab to establish and launch its inaugural brand. As the organization evolved into a nationally acclaimed standard for rural innovation, the enduring partnership with Matterlab shifted to building and implementing a communication strategy — all while managing complex district dynamics across a set of five superintendents and the unique contexts of their teams and communities. Five years in, our work together continues. We crafted a rebrand, devised a comprehensive brand rollout strategy, and designed leadership trainings for superintendents to align on strategic goals and vision for their next phase as an organization, ensuring they make a lasting impact.

The Results

  • National acclaim: The RSIZ has achieved national recognition for its achievement in innovative education and become the benchmark and blueprint for rural education across the country.
  • Expansion: The RSIZ has nearly doubled in size due to its success and public perception and is looking toward a future of expansion to other states.
“Matterlab has functioned as a critical part of the RSIZ since we launched. This is a deeply trusted partnership, and Matterlab's guidance, strategy, and execution always reflects and exceeds my hopes and aspirations for the Zone.”
Mike Gonzalez
Founder and Executive Director of the RSIZ
